The 3 DES Fix is comprised of 2 components – an EPP (Encrypting Pin Pad) and a Control Module.
The non-encrypting pin pad from the ATM is removed and replaced with the 3 DES Fix EPP. The control module acts as a message routing device between the network processor and the ATM and physically sits between the communications device and the ATM.
When a PIN number is entered, the 3 DES Fix EPP instantaneously encrypts the PIN into Triple DES at the point of entry. Since the ATM still thinks it is doing Single DES, the 3 DES Fix EPP sends the internal processor of the ATM four Zeros which it Single DES encrypts (with false Single DES Master Keys). The Single DES PIN Block is stripped from the Out Bound message by the Control Module. The Control Module perfoms a Function Call to the EPP to retrieve the EPP generated Triple DES PIN Block, which replaces the ATM generated Single DES PIN Block. The transaction message is then communicated to the network processor along with all other normal message flow.
The ATM does not require any additional hardware or software changes. The 3 DES Fix hardware installs in under one hour.
